Questions to ask about converting a term life insurance policy

A conversion provision can be valuable, but its terms vary by policy. Here are practical questions to bring to your carrier or agent before a term life conversion deadline approaches.

Term life insurance is designed to provide coverage for a stated period. Some term policies include a conversion provision, which may allow the owner to change some or all of the term coverage to a permanent life insurance policy. That option can matter if your needs, health, or long-term goals have changed since you bought the policy.

But conversion is not automatic, and the details are not the same from one policy to another. A conversion provision may set conditions around timing, the amount that can be converted, and the permanent policies available. Before making any decision, request the actual policy provision and ask the carrier to confirm how it applies to your policy. The policy,.

Start with the conversion provision itself

The first question is simple: does your current term policy include a conversion provision? Do not rely only on a general description of the policy type or on what you remember from the application process. Ask for a copy of the policy and locate the provision that addresses conversion.

A useful next question is: what does this provision allow me to do? It may describe whether you can convert all or only part of the death benefit, whether there are limits on the amount you can convert, and whether the option applies only during a particular part of the term. It may also explain what happens to the portion of term coverage that is not converted.

Ask the carrier to provide its answer in writing, along with the relevant policy language. If an illustration, quote, or other material is provided, keep it with your policy records. The policy and any applicable rider documents control over informal explanations.

Confirm the deadline and eligibility conditions

A conversion option can have a deadline. Ask: what is the final date on which I may request a conversion? The answer may not be the same as the end date of your term coverage. Do not assume that a policy remains convertible for its entire term.

Also ask whether any events affect eligibility. For example, the carrier can explain whether the policy must be in force, whether premiums must be current, and whether a lapse or other change in policy status affects the option. If you are considering converting only part of the policy, ask whether there is a minimum amount and whether later conversions of the remaining term coverage would still be possible.

Request a clear explanation of the steps required to make a request and when it must be received. If timing is important, confirm the carrier’s process directly rather than waiting until the last day.

Do not confuse conversion with renewal

Conversion and renewal address different choices.

A renewal provision may allow coverage to continue after the original term ends, subject to the terms of the policy. A conversion provision may allow a change from term insurance to a permanent form of life insurance. Permanent life insurance is generally intended to remain in force for a longer period as long as required premiums are paid, but each product has its own features, costs, and conditions.

Ask the carrier: does this policy have a renewal option, a conversion option, or both? If both exist, ask for separate explanations of each. Find out how a renewal would affect the policy’s duration and premium, and how a conversion would change the type of policy, premium obligation, and coverage structure. These are separate decisions, so it is important not to treat one as a substitute for the other.

Ask which permanent policies are available

A conversion provision may not let you choose any permanent policy the carrier sells. It may limit conversion to certain products that the carrier makes available under the provision at that time.

Ask which permanent life insurance policies are currently available for conversion under your policy. Request product materials that describe the options, including the death benefit, premium structure, guarantees, fees or charges where applicable, and how the policy can remain in force. If the carrier provides an illustration, review what is guaranteed and what is not.

It is also reasonable to ask whether the product choices available through conversion can change and whether the carrier’s current list is the final list for your request. Get the answer from the carrier rather than assuming that a product available today will be available later.

Understand premiums before you act

A permanent policy generally has a different premium structure from a term policy. Ask for the premium associated with the specific permanent policy and coverage amount you are considering. Ask how often payments are due, what payment options are available, and what could happen if required premiums are not paid.

Avoid assuming that your existing term premium will carry over. The carrier can explain the premium for the new policy, any guaranteed elements, and any values or assumptions shown in an illustration. If the conversion would replace only part of your term coverage, ask what premium and coverage would remain under the original term policy.

Review the new policy materials carefully. A lower initial payment is not, by itself, a full comparison of how a policy works over time.

Clarify the underwriting question

One reason people ask about conversion is that a provision may allow a move to an eligible permanent policy without new medical underwriting. Whether that applies, and under what conditions, depends on the policy and carrier rules. It should not be assumed.

Ask directly: will this conversion require new medical questions, an exam, records, or other underwriting? If no new underwriting is required, ask the carrier to confirm that in writing and explain whether any exceptions apply. If underwriting is required, ask what information and process are involved.

Also ask what happens if a conversion request is incomplete or if the carrier needs additional information. Understanding the process before a deadline can help you avoid relying on an assumption about eligibility or timing.
