Term life insurance: the essential questions to ask

What coverage length and amount are really trying to solve.

Term life insurance is straightforward in concept: coverage lasts for a selected period and can pay a death benefit if the insured person dies while the policy is in force. The important work is defining the need.

Who depends on your income or care?

Think beyond a paycheck. Childcare, household management, caregiving, and other unpaid work can also have a meaningful replacement cost.

How long does the need last?

A term might be shaped around the years until children become independent, a mortgage is paid down, or a partner reaches retirement. Different needs can have different timelines.

What should the benefit cover?

Common considerations include income replacement, debts, education goals, final expenses, and an additional financial cushion. Existing savings and coverage may reduce the remaining gap.

Can the coverage stay affordable?

The best-designed policy still needs to fit the budget. Ask how premiums behave during the initial term and what options, costs, or restrictions apply later.
